  • The thermometer, eyeglasses, typewriter, and telephone were all Italian inventions

  • The Vatican was built by Constantine and is very important to Italy because that is where the pope lives and the pope is very important to the Catholic traditions

  • Italy did not become a united country until 1861
  • The prime minister is the head of the government and is the one who runs the country
  • Everybody over the age of 18 can vote but only those over the age of 25 to vote in senate elections

  • The Italian flag's colors represents different virtues: Green= Hope, White= Faith, and Red= Charity
  • Pasta is Italy's national dish and Italy consumes about 55 pounds of pasta a year

How did the physical landscape affect the economy?
  • The mountains allowed less trade from other countries
  • The mountains also made it harder to export and import items
  • More than 75% of Italy has mountains or hills meaning there is less area to have a farm and grow crops, making there less to sell for the farmer or country
  • Being very close to the water did help a lot to get and give items

How does the economy affect Italy's culture?
  • Italy is a lot about the way people look and if Italy's economy suddenly went down then people would not be able to get clothes and feel good about their impression on others

  • The family is the center of social structure and it provides a stabilizing influence for it's members.
  • Appearances and clothes matter in Italy.
  • They are extremely fashion conscious and judge people by their appearances.
  • The way you dress can indicate your social status and your family's background.
  • First impressions are lasting impressions.
  • The family provides an emotional and financial support to it's members.

What type of government does Italy have?

  • The type of government in Italy is a parliamentary democracy.
  • The President serves a 7- year term and can dissolve Parliament, hold elections, and commands armed forces /calls war.
  • The Prime Minister determines the national policy and is chosen by the president.The Prime Minister is the head of the government.
  • The Parliament consists of a Chamber of Deputies (630 members) and the Senate (315 members).They serve 5- year terms and have equal power in passing laws.
  • The government has a system of checks and balances.

How is Italy's government repressive?

  • Italy's government is repressing against migrant workers from Africa.
  • Italian anarchists and other social rebels are being rrepressed against.

Change of Government

How has Italy's government changed through time?

  • At first, Italy's government started as a monarchy ruled by a king and changed to a democratic republic.
  • The major reason for this change is that the monarchy was abolished due to a popular referundum(vote on an issue of public importance). Many citizens wanted a say in the government and did not want to invest all power on one king.

  • Physical features in Italy include sandy beaches, mountains, volcanoes, and hills topped with green fields and vineyards.
  • Physical features that are emphasized of Italy are the two mountains ( Alps and Apennines), large volcanoes and the Mediterranean sea.
  • The climate in Italy is very hot and dry in the summer, generally sunny during spring and fall, and rainy and cloudy in the winter.
